Tulsi(Basil)is admired in Hinduism and the plant is connected with Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Various stories in the Puranas describe the value of the Tulsi plant and also there are several incidents in the life of Krishna which is linked with the Tulsi plant. It is believed that Shri Krishna destroys the ego of the person he loves the most. This story tells how Sri Krishna broke the ego of his beloved wife Satyabhama through Tulsi.

Satyabhama was Proud that Krishna loved her most-

Krishna and Satyabhama

Satyabhama was the beloved wife of Lord Krishna. She was an incarnation of BhooDevi, the Goddess of Earth. She was proud of her beauty and constantly believed that Lord Krishna adored her most. When Sage Narad got to know about this, he decided to break Satyabhama’s pride by the trap of his words. He reached Dwarika and was traditionally welcomed by Satyabhama.

Delighted with her welcome, Devshree Narad requested Satyabhama to ask a boon. She needed the blessing from Sage Narada that Lord Krishna will be her husband in all her births. Sage Narad directed her, whatever she charities in the present birth, she gets in future life. If she aspires for Shri Krishna in the next birth then donates him.

Satyabhama donated Krishna-

Satyabhama was ready to donate Lord Krishna to Sage Narada without a second thought. Sage Narad immediately took Shri Krishna with him. Satyabhama questioned Narada Ji about where he is taking her husband. Narada Ji informed her, presently she has given him Shri Krishna, and now he has authority over him. Now Shri Krishna relates to him. Satyabhama realized her mistake. She wanted to get Krishna again from Narada but Narada Ji refused. When other queens of Lord Krishna learned the incident they came into the picture.

All queens started begging Narad to return their husband. Narad again answered them that Shri Krishna has been given by Satyabhama and if they want to get their husband again, they should give him gold of similar weight to Shri Krishna. Satyabhama was delighted to hear this. All queens brought their valuable gold ornaments. Still to their utter surprise, all their ornaments were less in weight than that of Shri Krishna, and the weighing scale did not move a bit. The queens could not get Shri Krishna upon thousands of ornaments. Shri Krishna performed all this to crush the pride of Satyabhama.

Satyabhama gets Rukmini’s Guidance-

Satyabhama and other Queens met Rukmini

Satyabhama has done wrong by donating Shri Krishna. Satyabhama then realized her foolishness and seriously needed to get back Lord Krishna. Finally, Satyabhama decided to get the guidance of Rukmini. After listening to the story, Rukmini learned the secret. Rukmini stated the almighty cannot be purchased by gold.

Rukmini immediately plucked a Tulsi leaf and gave it to Satyabhama and directed to remove all the jewelry and put the Tulsi leaf on the weighing scale. Satyabhama acted as advised by Rukmini. Surprisingly the scale moved and balance was struck. Satyabhama’s ego went to dust. Later, Rukmini told Satyabhama and other queens that Lord Krishna cannot be impressed by luxury or beauty but only by true devotion. And Tulsi plant is one of his most prominent believers.

Moral of the Story-

1)Ego or Pride is a big barrier to spiritual growth. When a person becomes self-centered, God goes away.

2) In front of God, the value of luxuries, gold, and jewelry is zero.

3) Pure love and devotion for God are enough to win over him.
