Kartik month is regarded as a very holy month in Hinduism. This is the last month of Chaturmas. This month has an important and auspicious significance in the Hindu religion. In this month Lord Vishnu wakes up from yoga sleep and there is a rain of joy and grace in the creation. This month, Maa Lakshmi visits the earth and gives immense wealth to the devotees.
The Kartik month started from November 1 will last till November 30. In this month, the devotees not only worship Lord Vishnu but they also worship Goddess Lakshmi. The devotees keep fast this month. However, it is necessary to follow some rules this month. It is said that if a person follows the rules correctly in this month, they get happiness and prosperity. The plant of Tulsi must be worshipped in this month, although it is best to consume and worship Tulsi every month, Tulsi Puja in Kartik month doubles the importance of worship. It is suggested to keep an extra plant for consumption and fresh Tulsi leaves should be added to food to keep it pollutant-free. It is believed that due to change in weather, dust-particles and bacteria easily contaminate food and the use of Tulsi leaves makes them safe for consumption.
2. Deepdan-
According to the Dharma Shastras, Devotees should donate “Diyas” in Kartik month which is known as Deepdan. In this month, lamps are offered in rivers and ponds, etc. This leads to the attainment of virtue and it gives prosperous life to a person.
Those fasting on Kartik month should behave like ascetics, they should not condemn or dispute anyone, maintain self-discipline on the mind, etc.
Oil should be applied to the body on the day of Narak Chaturdashi only once in Kartik month. Applying oil on other days is prohibited in Kartik month.
According to the Hindu sacred texts, it is recommended that one should avoid a non-vegetarian diet in this holy month since it drives to ‘demons’ life. As per medical science, in this month animals are in the process of reproduction and acquire various diseases. Consuming them during this period may fail the digestion process of the human body.
For keeping the body warm and controlling blood pressure, jaggery is known for its magical health benefits. It is suggested to consume jaggery daily in the month of Kartik to keep the body safe from pollutants, blood pressure issues, and seasonal cough and cold.
The celebration of Kartik Purnima includes the preparation of wheat flour halwa as Bhog. Scholars believe that eating wheat halwa during the month acts as a safeguard that prevents your body from illness. It is prepared with wheat flour, ghee, sugar, cardamom powder, and raisin, and it is considered that these elements help keep the body warm and protected.
